Yotta Quest Black Templar Design

It’s been a while since my last update.  I’ve been very busy.  I’m still working on my confidential project, so I thought I’d show off a few of my not-so-confidential ones…

The first two images are concepts for a logo.  I was drafted to help ModernCamaro.com out with a new logo design.  The project description was “just make something.”  Broad projects can be fun sometimes, but in this case I’d have preferred a narrower scope on the guidelines.  It’s just going to take more time to lock down exactly what the client had in mind.  I don’t find the newer Camaros to be as iconic as their older counterparts, so I focused on the racing stripes and the grille for my concepts.  Partway through, I began to draw from elements of the dashboard for inspiration.  I hoped variety and quantity would help them point to what they were looking for better.

The final image is my fun monthly project I work on for YottaQuest’s newsletter.  I found an awesome character from the Warhammer 40k universe called a Black Templar.  It looks really awesome so of course, I felt I needed to draw it.  The Space Marines are very stiff characters, so I’m still debating how dynamic I really want him to look.

I have been cranking on other projects pretty hardcore and sometimes I need a break to do my own stuff.  Even if it’s a small one.  This sketch is over a month old or so, so I painted it in about an hour (can you tell?) for the Yottaquest newsletter.  Yottaquest’s site is http://www.yottaquest.com.  They’re a fun board game store in Cincinnati.

Warmachines is basically a Warhammer miniatures clone, but I really like the look of the figures a lot.  I took some liberties with the paint job on this and lit up all the surface decorations so it glowed more.

I love how I treated the engines (or whatever those are) on his back and how I had started to paint the water.  Unfortunately, I can’t spare much time for this stuff lately, so he had to stay monochromatic to save time.  It was really turning out well too.

As my current projects are still in production, I’ve had to dig into my archives to find something fun to post.  I have two projects on the side I’d like to do, so as soon as I get a spare moment, I’ll have to start dropping some process on this blog.

Illustrators can make type too!  I went all out on my July poster and after spending hours and hours painting Leona from King of Fighters, I designed and painted the type face for the title as well!  It left it with a fun, illustrative feeling in the end.

I even heavily  manipulated the dates.  This project was exhausting to execute, but the dedication really showed.

After months of making posters I really wanted to show off what I was capable of by making every aspect completely original.  My own art, my own design, my own type!

I used Japanese signage as inspiration for the typeface I created.  I needed it to have the Asian flair to match the Japanese fighting game it was showcasing.  When the vectors weren’t doing enough for me, I switched to hand painted textures to give it an old backlit sign look.  It came out pretty cool!

Much like baking a pie, it’s easier to buy a crust sometimes and just make the filling homemade.  ;)  I need to find a nice balance between creating my own components and letting standard fonts do what they do best – save me time!  Haha.

When I was offered the opportunity to make the logo for an upcoming game — I got excited because they wanted a grunge look.  However, they wanted it in vector!  There’s plenty of grunge stuff out there to use, but it’s certainly not freeware.  I debated for a bit and decided to do it the good ol’ fashioned way – India ink, bristol, and a dirty brush.

After a fun afternoon on the porch, I imported various drips, splatters, and brush strokes into Photoshop and cleaned them up to trace them into Illustrator.  Then I could make them whatever color I wanted!

It behooves me to set myself apart from other artists by looking pro!  As a result, my clients are set up with slick proof sheets showing concepts and progress.  They’re not the most amazing of designs, mind you, but if the sheet looks prettier than the work on it, then I’m not doing my job.

It’s always satisfying to finish a project!  I had the fun opportunity to work with some fellas who were creating an RTS iPhone app.  They wanted a Tron look to the game – which meant simple graphic shapes and LOTS of glowing.

As the sprites kept getting finished, it was fun to watch the game evolve with the new look I was creating for them.  I love games with a retro look like Geometry Wars and Asteroids – so I was thrilled at the opportunity to do something in the style of my favorite games.

It was fun, but very time consuming because it required so many sprites!  They were broken into different sections so that the game could animate the turrets to rotate on an axis.  I’d never done it before, but it was pretty cool to see the finished results.

I decided on a temporary logo to fill in as my branding until I can come up with a better one.  I’ve been busy with a lot of projects lately and as soon as I have spare time again I’ll be back up and running on the logo design.

The portfolios are starting to fill up and I’m looking to finally make a set of Moo business cards.  (Gotta collect ‘em all!)  I foresee fun marketing in my futureeee.  Perhaps mailers?

I also gotta customize this blog.  I had one that was supposed to be my personal blog, but I started using it to show processes and sketches and personal posts and it is a mish mash of too many things.  I’d like to make this one more concise and related to everything Two Bit Art does.

I really want to do a portfolio update – as it’s been a while – but the projects I’m doing currently are under wraps.  I’ve never had to be forced to wait on so much at once.
